Geography of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS)


Mato Grosso do Sul occupies an area of 357,140 km² but is home to only about 2.4 million inhabitants. It is one of the least densely populated areas in Brazil with only 6.9 inhabitants/km² (2010). One of the reasons for this is the fact that over one third of the state is a marshy floodland called the PantanalIts capital city is Campo Grande.

The major rivers are: Río ParaguayRio ParanáRio Paranaíba, Rio Miranda, Rio Aquidauana, Rio Taquari, Rio Negro, Rio Apa and Rio Correntes. The Pantanal wetland is located inbetween these rivers.
